{"id":27474,"date":"2019-04-03T17:40:14","date_gmt":"2019-04-03T21:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goebt.com\/hawaii-might-be-banning-cigarettes-why-you-should-care\/"},"modified":"2025-03-20T15:43:24","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T19:43:24","slug":"hawaii-might-be-banning-cigarettes-why-you-should-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goebt.com\/hawaii-might-be-banning-cigarettes-why-you-should-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Hawaii Might Be Banning Cigarettes: Why You Should Care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Earlier this year, Hawaii lawmakers proposed a bipartisan bill that would begin to eliminate cigarettes from the entire state over the next several years.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 This new bill aims to first raise the legal purchasing age for tobacco to 100 years old.\u00a0 That\u2019s right, if approved, this new law would make it illegal for anyone under 100 to buy tobacco products by 2024.\u00a0 This proposed bill is yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2019\/02\/05\/younger-than-soon-you-might-not-be-able-smoke-cigarettes-hawaii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another step in the state\u2019s path toward \u201ckeeping people healthy and alive in the Aloha State,\u201d says Rep. Cynthia Thielen.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In the past few years, Hawaii has been working toward limiting the usage of tobacco products by increasing taxes, increasing regulations, and even banning smoking for people under the age of 21.\u00a0 Thielen said that the previous law changes simply \u201cpoked at different portions of the problem.\u201d She claims that this new bill would go right to the center of the problem and actually prohibit smoking as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would continuously raise the minimum legal smoking age each year for the next 4 years until the legal age is 100 in 2024.\u00a0 This extended time frame will allow for the state to adjust to the lost tax revenue over time.\u00a0 Although the bill doesn\u2019t apply to cigars, chewing tobacco, or e-cigarettes, lawmakers are already working to address the issues with those products as well.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not a store owner in Hawaii, you\u2019re probably wondering why you should be paying attention to this legislation.\u00a0 Well, the answer is simple.\u00a0 This could happen in your state, too.\u00a0 As you probably know, the tobacco sales debate has been ongoing for decades and the cigarette has remained under fire for being <a href=\"https:\/\/tobaccocontrol.bmj.com\/content\/22\/suppl_1\/i27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cthe deadliest artifact in the history of human civilization\u201d<\/a>.
